Like, 2001 – 2007 (different cookery
utensils, cotton thread and other objects)
In the installation entitled Like
(a play on words meaning "to like" and "as"),
thread is used as a sculptural material, while its variegated
colours openly point to the painting aspect of mixing paints.
In the work Like, the form
and colour of thread play similar roles as colour and form once
played in the works of High Modernism, with its characteristic
self-engrossment in colour, form and dimension. The form, i.e.
a long, thin structure of thread, and colours, which often blend
into new hues, have been used in a highly inventive and humorous
manner, which is further underpinned by the eloquent emplacement
of objects in the so-called kitchen context. Tuominen connects
and combines a crocheted cotton thread, a typical useful and creative
material of our households, with cookery devices found at flea
markets or, occasionally, in different apartments. The orange
thread on the grater represents grated carrots; yellow-and-white
threads enwrapping the fork are spaghetti; a white crocheted "doily"
with thread coming from the churn is spilled milk; a similar object
– only in black – is connected to the pepper mill and represents
pepper, of course, spread on the table. The highly sophisticated
humour radiating from the Like installation
has been inventively created from everyday objects and materials,
and it culminates precisely in the nut grinder mixing colours
and creating curved forms – just like a classical painter and
sculptor do in their creative process.
