Kreislauf / Circulation of the Blood,
2003 (velvet, filling, thread)
In the work entitled Kreislauf,
the primary material is red velvet, while thread is used as a
means of finalising the work. It is quite interesting to observe
the creations of textile artists,
who inventively employ the qualities of soft materials for the
construction of contextual
messages – frequently inspired by and objectifying inner organs.
As evident from the title
itself, the work of Justyna Koeke pays tribute to the circulation
of the blood, which forms the contextual essence of her large
and fanciful wall composition. The work addresses the viewer primarily
with its impressive red colour and its forms alluding to flowers,
leaves, paramoecia
and amoebae, snail shells, phalluses, vaginas and other organic
structures, connected by
means of tubiform linking elements. The eloquence of the formal
language, as well as the language of colour that denotes different
symbolic meanings in different cultures – which, however, are
generally marked by a magnitude of emotion – has been thoughtfully
strengthened by the softness of the selected material. These gentle
velvet structures call for
the tactile and function as an amiable, lovely, fanciful work
of art, a monument to the turbulent life steadily driven by our
circulation of the blood.
