Comestible 04, 2007, DVD video: 6
min 32 s
The video film entitled Comestibile
04, forms part of a larger series, although all videos
included in this series could also be seen as individual works.
Three of them were made in collaboration with the English singer
Sarah Brightman, and two of them – including the video presented
at this exhibition – in collaboration with the Spanish singer
Christina Rosenvinge. All the videos are positioned somewhere
between a cookery recipe and an act of surgery.
Therefore it is not surprising that surgical thread has been used
in the work as the main bearer of its message; it has been combined
with ready-made and new objects, such as glass eyes, artificial
matter in the shape of a birthday cake, and surgical and kitchen
utensils, such as a scalpel and scissors. The artist employs this
mixture of kitchen and surgical ambiences as a platform for the
self-ironic reflection of a contemporary, emancipated woman who
is capable of every deed but, at the same time, disoriented amidst
the plethora of her roles – those that are inherent to her and
those that she is actually able to realise. The identity of the
protagonist in
the video is blurred; the work speaks of common pain and anguish.
It also points to emotions, confusion, abandonment, (unpleasant)
confinement in one's own feelings, dreams, beliefs and longings.
All these traits are reflected in a musical score conveying a
high degree of appropriate pathos, which is so shameful in the
rationally oriented world. In direct opposition, the visual part
of the work presents a Buñuel-like aesthetic of the horrible.
If the visual language is rough, the musical one is consciously
kitschy – just like the delightful and kitschy language of love,
or infatuation.
