In his work, Martin Löffke uses
thread as a drawing stroke, which is most evident precisely in
the exhibited cycle. Here, thread is applied to canvas in an entirely
self-sufficient way, while in his other works Löffke first painted
abstract forms with acrylic paint on canvas, which then served
as a starting point for a dialogue with the sewn stroke. A similar
process of communication could also be noticed in the exhibited
cycle, only this time the communication runs between abstractly
and realistically embroidered figures (images of women and men,
horses, etc.), objects (scissors, car, flowers, yacht, etc.),
words (Angstpartie, Spaziergang, Schießpulver, Faust, Angebot,
etc.) and abstract structures. The narrative character of each
particular part is strongly emphasised by means of the mimetic
and textual forms and relationships between them; besides the
purely fine art elements, the formal language and its agitation
takes care of the narrative ambience, which hints at a metaphysical
or fairy-like world, although it is strongly related to real-life
experiences. In fact, Löffke's artworks pay tribute to
the unconscious. Images and structures in the creative process
are not chosen beforehand but, rather, result from the artist's
momentary inspiration and impulses obtained from his surroundings,
which he materialises on canvas by means of his child-like enthusiasm
and an inventive selection of materials and techniques. Sometimes
he is enraptured by an image and sometimes by a word, its sound
or graphic outlook. In his artistic work, Löffke resorts to the
creative principle of abstract art (with partially abstract results),
and thus his works also pay tribute to the meditative stage of
the artistic process.
Born in 1966 in Eutin (Germany). He used to work as a hairdresser,
postman, salesman and farm help. Between 1998 and 2003 he studied
at the High School for Fine Arts in Hamburg. In 2006 he lectured
on "Art in Germany between 1980 and 2006". Since 1996
