Security Service. Let's Have a Rest,
2005 (foam, clothes)
In the work entitled Security
Service. Let's Have a Rest, thread
is used as a means of creation
of the artwork. It is visible as a stitch binding the garments
of public workers into a piece of cloth. The fabric enwraps or
virtually dresses up three pillows casually placed in the space,
and thus the work acquires its applied value. In this work, the
essence of the sitting objects, which invoke perception through
the criteria of design products, is consciously employed in the
manner of pluralistic strategies of contemporary art production
– in fact, as play. Janin's artwork is visitor-friendly. It offers
him/her a chance to rest – on the physical and the mental level.
It is
not redundant to mention that every exhibition room requires a
spot that offers a possibility for introspection. This work presents
such an island at this exhibition. The primary goal of the installation,
however, is to invite the viewer to think about the substance
of the work. The garments of cleaners of (outdoor) public spaces
and members of first aid crews, or protective jackets in general,
as well as cordons that adorn these packages, connote the restricted
areas
of movement. The work raises awareness in the viewer about the
unselfish work of those employed in the mentioned sectors. Is
it not precisely individuals from these sectors who sacrificed
their health and frequently their lives after terrorist attacks,
for instance on
September 11? The comfortable sculptural emplacement is a monument
to all unselfish individuals, who are most frequently forgotten
as soon as the "catastrophes" come to an end.
