MAGNANI Ana 7. 3. 1908 - 26. 9. 1973

She was a singer and stage actress before finding her true calling on the big screen. Magnani had a bit part in the silent Scampolo (1927) and made her talkie debut with another small role in Cavalleria (1936), directed by her husband, Goffredo Alessandrini (1904-78). After several other roles, she was given international exposure in Roberto Rossellini's neorealistic Rome Open City (1945), which showcased the passionate sensuality that would capture movie audiences. Her extraordinary dual role in Rossellini's L'Amore (1948) solidified her stardom. Magnani's part as the leading lady of an acting troupe in 18th-century South America in Jean Renoir's Golden Coach (1952) is considered by many to be her finest film performance. It was for her earthy widow in Tennessee Williams's Rose Tattoo (1955), however, that she won the Academy Award for best actress. Although she was nominated again for Wild Is the Wind (1957), that and subsequent vehicles failed to elicit from Magnani the magic that had been hers.

MARKIEWICZ Constance 4.2.1868 - 5.7.1927

The future Countess Constance Georgine Markieviez was born Constance Gore-Booth in London. While studying art at the Slade School in London she met her husband, a Polish aristocrat, Count Casimir Markievicz. They married in 1900 and subsequently settled in Dublin where she emerged on the political scene, first becoming active in the women’s suffragette movement. Her role in the nationalist movement began when she became involved in Sinn Fein. In 1910 she organised the protests against the visit of King George to Dublin. After a protest march she was arrested for burning a Union Jack, an inkling of her future militarism. The poverty in Dublin’s working classes distressed her and in 1912 she set up a network of free food kitchens for the poor. During the lockout of 1913 she strongly supported the workers. She fought for the Citizen Army in the 1916 Rising as part of the Citizen Army contingent, she was sentenced to death but was reprieved for political reasons. On 1917 a general amnesty was given to republican prisoners including Markieviez, who was being held in very poor conditions in Aylesbury prison. During the War of Independence she was arrested and imprisoned numerous times. Her sister is Eva Gore-Booth.

MARY Duchess of Burgundy 1457 - 1482

Mary Duchess of Burgundy, also known as Mary the Rich was first sovereign lady of the Netherlands. In 1477, Mary inherited all Burgundian possessions, but this was disputed for the fact that she was a woman. With her Great Privilege she established peace and quiet in the Dutch provinces. Mary’s marriage to Maximilian of Habsburg would determine the international position of the Netherlands for several centuries. Her choice of partner rendered a union with France as well as an autonomous status impossible for the time being. Her provinces became the focus of European politics. Due to her personality and the obligingness of her reign, however, the unity of the major provinces of the Burgundian Netherlands was maintained.

Njene življenjske vloge so vključevale Slávko v filmu Másíc nad řekou Fráňa Šrámeka, Blanche v Tennesseejevi A Streetcar named Desire, mater v Bertolta Brechta Mati korajža in njeni otroci.

Czech actress started to study at a conservatory after graduation from grammar school, but joined a Brno theatre company in spring 1940 before finishing the study programme. She then joined a Plzeň theatre company, and next moved to Prague before the end of the war. She played dozens of diverse female characters from the world repertoire on the stages of Prague City Theatres and the National Theatre. Her roles of a lifetime included Slávka in Fráňa Šrámek’s Měsíc nad řekou, Blanche in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, mother in Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children. She also appeared in several TV series, such as Taková normální rodinka, F.L. Věk, and Nemocnice na kraji města. The performance of the couple Dana Medřická and Karel Höger in the TV drama Romeo a Julie na konci listopadu is unforgettable.

MEIR Golda 3.5.1898 - 8.12.1978

Golda Meir was the prime minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974. Born into a poor Jewish family in Kiev, Ukraine, she emigrated to Milwaukee, USA in 1906. She married Morris Myerson in 1917, and the couple emigrated to Palestine in 1921. In the years before and during World War II, Meir held key posts in the Jewish Agency (the highest Jewish authority in British-administered Palestine) and in the World Zionist Organization. After Israel proclaimed its independence in 1948, she was appointed ambassador to the USSR by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, later serving as minister of labor (1949-56) and minister of foreign affairs (1956-66), as well as head of the Israeli delegation to the United States. Meir, who had adopted her Hebrew name in 1956, assumed the position of prime minister in 1969, after the death of Levi Eshkol. On Oct. 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria launched an attack, catching Israel by surprise. Although Israeli forces were able to rally and go on the offensive, Meir and her defense minister, Moshe Dayan, were criticized for being unprepared for the Arab attack. In the spring elections of 1974 the Labor party suffered a setback, and Meir--unable to form a government--resigned.

The physicist Lise Meitner , together with her nephew Otto R.  Frisch,  published in 1939 a theoretical interpretation of nuclear fission. After receiving (1906) her doctorate from the University of Vienna, Meitner began her research career in 1907 with the radiochemist Otto Hahn. In 1917 they discovered protactinium, the precursor substance from which actinium is formed. Meitner then became head (1917-38) of the physics department of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin. Fleeing Nazi persecution, she resumed her work at the Nobel Institute in Sweden. Her theoretical work helped to clarify the relationships between beta and gamma rays.

MERICI Angela sv. (st.) 21.3.1474 - 27.1.1540

She was born in Italy and lived at her uncle. In 1524, while making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, she became suddenly blind, but continued her journey to the Holy Places and was cured on her return while praying before a crucifix at the same place where she was struck with blindness a few weeks before. When, in 1525, she had come to Rome to gain the indulgences, Pope Clement VII, who had heard of her great holiness and her extraordinary success as a religious teacher of young girls, invited her to remain in Rome; but Angela, who shunned publicity, returned to Brescia. There in 535, Angela chose twelve virgins and laid the foundation of the order of the Ursulines in a small house near the Church of St. Afra in Brescia. Having been five years superior of the newly-founded order, she died. She was beatified in 1768, by Clement XIII, and canonized in 1807, by Pius VII.

Zgodbam o družbeni in psihološki podobi meščanstva v zgodovinskih prelomnih krizah sta nato sledili še dve knjigi mladinske proze in dva zgodovinska romana, prvi o intrigantskem življenju v stari rimski Emoni (Tujec v Emoni, 1978) in drugi o času ljubljanskega kongresa (Cesta dveh cesarjev, 1981).

The writer and translator Mira Mihelič a double Prešeren Award winner (1950, 1983), was president of the Slovene Writers' Association (1963–1966) and of the Slovene PEN centre (1966–1975); a good observer of the life around her, in her earliest works she painted a picture of life among the Slovene bourgeoisie (Obraz v zrcalu [Face in the Mirror], 1941).

Gabriela Mistral was the pen name of the Chilean poet Lucila Godoy Alcayaga,  the first Spanish-American writer to win the Nobel Prize (1945). She enjoyed a continental reputation as a humanitarian and educator, and, together with several other writers, contributed greatly to postmodernist verse. Mistral won a poetry contest in 1914 with Sonetos de la muerte (Sonnets of Death), which were inspired by a tragic love affair and grew into a larger and her best collection, aptly entitled Desolacion (Desolation, 1922). Her only other books of poetry are Ternura (Tenderness, 1924), Tala (Destruction, 1938), and Lagar (Winepress, 1954). Mistral's poems deal with nature, biblical motifs, death, platonic love, and especially love of children and of the dispossessed; they are permeated by feelings of sadness, compassion, asceticism, unsatisfied maternal longing, and communion with the land.

MODERSOHN-BECKER Paula 8.2.1876 - 20.11.1907

Paula Modersohn-Becker, developed an antiromantic, consciously primitive style that anticipated 20th-century German expressionism. While her friends painted vast landscapes at the artists' colony of Worpswede, outside Bremen, Modersohn-Becker singled out individual forms, such as a burly peasant or a massive barn. Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson (or Baker), Los Angeles, after rising from bit parts, became one of the most celebrated film personalities of her time. Hers was the classic show-business tragedy. Stardom seemed a burden; being an international sex goddess, even more so. Her second husband was baseball star Joe DiMaggio. Following her third marriage, to playwright Arthur Miller, she struggled to understand theories of acting and wanted to star in the classics. When this effort proved fruitless, she became so difficult to work with that she was virtually unemployable. Yet in the handful of comedies in which she starred her personal ebullience and freshness transcend her limitations: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), The Seven Year Itch (1955), The Prince and the Showgirl (1957), and Some Like It Hot (1959). She also performed competently in two dramatic roles, Bus Stop (1956) and The Misfits (1961). She died from an overdose of sleeping pills, possibly a suicide.
On stamp BG-4185 is also Marlene Dietrich (name is written on left side of stamp), but on stamp is depicted Greta Garbo.
On stamp N-1216 is also Foss Wenche.

MONTESSORI Maria 31.8.1870 - 6.5.1952

Maria Montessori, an Italian physician-educator, devised the educational method that bears her name. She was the first woman in Italy to receive a medical degree and began her career working at the University of Rome's psychiatric clinic. Her experience there with retarded children led her to found the State Orthophrenic School of Rome. She extended her methods to normal children in 1907 by opening her first Casa dei Bambini (Children's House) in a Rome slum. This house also proved successful, and many other Montessori schools were established. After she fled the Italian Fascist government in 1934, she worked in Spain and South Asia before settling in the Netherlands,

French impressionist painter. She studied with many gifted painters, including Corot. She formed a close friendship with Manet, who became her brother-in-law, and she served as model for several of his best-known paintings. The two greatly influenced each other's artistic development. Her own later work inclined toward pure impressionism in its rendering of light, while retaining an unusual smoothness of brushwork. Her paintings formed an important addition to all but one impressionist exhibit from 1874 through 1885. Her most notable works, including Young Woman at the Dance (1880; Paris) and La Toilette, are painted in clear, luminous colors. Her early subject matter included landscapes and marine scenes; later she most frequently painted tranquil portraits of mothers and children. Morisot's works have been particularly popular in the United States, and many important works are in American collections.
