The town is situated by the river Drava.

It is surrounded by mysterious forests, spring fields and numerable wine-growing hills which are planted with noble vines. The tradition of producing wines is very much alive in the remarkable Ptuj Wine Cellar, which archives boast with a wine from the year 1917, the oldest in Slovenia.
