ANDREJ PAVLIČ
Peterokotni stolp, 11.1. do 12.3.2012
Slikarsko kiparska razstava "Ciklus naprej v preteklost"
Forward to the Past

Forward to the Past
Andrej Pavlič is an artist who likes to delve into the world's past and the archaic in his paintings. At first glance his work seems distant from main-stream art. However in combining various artistic techniques and mixing numerous mediums he makes a connection with contemporary movements. His constant motif, which reminds us of Ariadne's string trailing through the labyrinth of his painting, is impermanence. At Ljubljana Castle the artist exhibits a cycle of sculpture-paintings called "Forward to the Past" in which he combines painting and object-making.
Small objects which resemble the Greek mythological creature, the Minotaur, are made from wire skeletons and then shaped with modelling paste and various textile and paper materials which give the appearance of drapery. The dents and holes randomly created in this process conjure up the impression of decay and fleetingness. An ever-present stylised human figure in the images of the Minotaur suggests sacrifice. These seemingly fragile and decaying figures are placed in containers which function like massive architectural backgrounds and the surfaces carrying these objects are accentuated with mixed art techniques. The collage backgrounds combine fabric textures and fine-grained surfaces which, intensified by the application of earth colouring, add substance to the paintings.
The symbolism of the Minotaur, half man half bull, has a rich history which reaches back as far as ancient Greece. The bull represents the primeval force which is simultaneously destructive and creative. To be able to control this ambiguity people are forced to make sacrifices. The human figures located in the Minotaur's stomach are these sacrificed victims.
When we are able to comprehend the Minotaur as the symbol of an aggressive and dominant patriarchal society its message becomes universal and timeless. Since aggression is a part of human nature, we will never be able to avoid it completely. So in this inseparable duality of bull and man, in this game of the aggressive and creative versus the submissive and calm, lies the fascinating mystery.
In observing these paintings we enter a world which reflects the constant rotation of issues and problems with which our civilization has to struggle.
