Students from class six worked on the proverbs and sayings together with their teacher Nada Majcen for a month.

INTRODUCTION

Proverbs and sayings are the fruits of our past and have been spread mouth to mouth from generation to nowadays generation. Only much later they were written down. These short  methaphors expressing wisdom of life are one of the ways we express ourselves; they provide insights into beliefs and simple truths. They express practical truths or a simple perception of everyday life. They express our attitude towards the world in the past and present. Sayings and proverbs are used by different professions or age representatives, by rural or urban people; they are very short and to the point, pithy sayings used at the beginning or at the end to enrich our conversation. They also function as tiny ornamental adding of language that make the meaning stronger or more meaningful.

Our kids also often work on proverbs and sayings at school. So we decided to have a closer look on them with a group of students at extra lessons of Slovene.

I made a collection of proverbs that students mostly experience in the novels and other literary books they use to read. They are sometimes not easy to understand as those life beliefs and truths are somehow remote and not used in nowadays language.

Students first tried to explain the meaning of the given proverbs as they understood them and experienced them if read word by word. They used their own experience and tried to use them in proper way or circumstances.

Then they compared their explanations to the explanations in the Slovene Dictionary. As we have the electronic version of it, it proved to be a quite convenient and fast way of finding the desired information.
