REPORT - PAPER IN OUR SCHOOL - 2002PAPER CONSUMPTION

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
PAPER
CONSUMPTION
- Paper consumption
Students in grade 5 prepared a questionnaire about paper consumption
between students. They decided to weigh all the paper stuff that students carry in their
bags. So they weighed students' bags in class 1, class 5 and class 8.

After measuring, they
estimated the total weight of books in our school (multiply it as total amount of students
in our school).
There are 550
students in our school.
The average weight of paper per student is: 4 kg. So 550 X 4 kg = 2200 kg.
The weight of all paper things students have is: 2200 kg. So we can say that in one school
year our students have and use about 2200 kg paper things.
2. Paper types:
Students walked around
school and observed what is made of paper and what it is used for. They listed:
Books, notebooks, sheets of paper with exercises,
tissues, boxes, bulletin boards notices, school documentation books, books for marks,
grades, plans, maps, tickets for lunch, calendars, students' artworks, paper towels,
money, maps, pictures, photos, teachers' books, books for reading, posters, handouts,
paper trash.
Then they tried to find out
how much of different types of paper is consumed per year. They went to the headmaster and
secretary and together
they listed:

PAPER RECYCLING
- The fourth group did a
research about what happens to different paper types after consumption at
our school. They found out:
Type |
Use after consumption |
Copies |
They cut
them, burn, throw them into trash bins |
Notebooks |
keep them
for a year - tests, then - cut them |
Toilet
paper |
After use
it goes into sewage system |
Drawing

They keep
them, burn, throw them into bins |
Magazines,
newspapers |
They
throw them into paper bins, use them for protecting desks at craft and art, |
Paper
towels |
They
throw them into paper bins |
Old
useless books |
Take them
to Dinos, where they recycle them |
- Our
school buys paper at a local store Grafika Soca. Unfortunately just a smaller amount of paper is environment-friendly (towels, toilet paper,
some notebooks, paper for copies, wrapping folders.).
SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
We went through the data
about paper and within our group discussed and made a list of five realistic ways to improve our paper consumption in our
school.
1. We can use course books (the school buys them) for more than 3
years. But we have to use them more carefully and try to wrap them well and not to write
in them.
2. We can reduce the number of photocopies and tests - specially
tests J .
3. We can arrange collecting old paper, prepare rewards for those
who collect more - excursions, competitions
4. We can try to use
recycled paper wherever possible. Use paper used sheets for drafts (on the other side). We
often have notebooks that still have some empty sheets at the end. We can use them for
exercises or drafts.
5. There should be more advertisements on TV and radio about
collecting paper for recycling.
