BrainEcho
Primo¾ Potoènik (2005)

Exploring the potential of neurofeedback and sonic neurotechnology for the research of expanded awareness. The project combines brainwave measurement, scientific signal processing, generation of binaural beats and live interaction of the human mind in a continuous neurofeedback loop.

Overview
A special binaural neurofeedback software package was developed for the BrainEcho project. The software package is designed to be used with a brainwave measuring device. The following EEG measuring module is supported in BrainEcho:

    MIND PEAK WaveRider jr

BrainEcho can be used as a support tool for the exploration of consciousness. It can be used without applying other mind techniques, or can be combined with meditation or other techniques reaching toward the altered states of consciousness. With BrainEcho you can:

  • record your brain waves
  • listen to binaural neurofeedback sound while recording
  • design your own sound protocols
  • use it for relaxation, meditation, exploration

How to use

  1. Hook on the electrodes as shown below
  2. Put on stereo headphones and sit or lay down in a comfortable position
  3. Start recording EEG data
  4. Experiment with Protocol designer to adjust audio and binaural feedback

Main window of the BrainEcho software includes charts of recorded EEG time series, power spectrum of EEG time series, and power spectra of generated left and right sound channels.

Protocol designer
The heart of BrainEcho is a binaural neurofeedback sound synthesizer which creates the sounds you are listening to during your BrainEcho sessions. The sound is provided for neurofeedback and for binaural brainwave entrainment. The sound is basically composed of 3 sinusoidal waveforms whose binaural frequencies correspond to delta, theta and alpha brainwave regions. The binaural frequency defines the difference of the sound heard from the left and right earphone.

Various parameters control the synthesizer properties, and combinations of parameter settings result in different protocols. Protocol is a set of parameters which define how the binaural neurofeedback sound will respond to your recorded brain waves. You can design your own protocols by opening Protocol designer window.
