OF VARIOUS TYPES OF ROOFING ENCOUNTERED IN DRY STONE HUTS IN FRANCE
Southern France boasts a wealth of agricultural drystone huts built in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Two main types of vaulting have been used by their builders:
- the vault of corbelled, outwardly slanted stones, by far the most commonly found;
- the vault of inwardly slanted stones, with a central keystone, a rare but noticeable occurrence
According to the material, the ground plan and the overall form chosen, as well as the expertise of the builder, these two types of vaulting display many variants, a number of which are reviewed in the paper.
