CONFLICTS BETWEEN TRADITION AND CHANGES
The development of architecture, the formulation of its new functions, the discovery of new construction technologies and building materials, the invention of new stylistic expressions and emotions have led to a diversity of spatial design. The traditional setting with its decoration and meaning creates the conditions in which a modern building can be regarded as the negation of traditional values and the assertion of new ones. While Plato believed architecture need not be changed, the futurist Marinetti claimed motor engine was worth more than the sculpture of Venus. This eternal conflict between the romanticism of the past claiming that old is beautiful and the romanticism of the present and the future claiming that new is beautiful may often be observed in architecture as well. The paper, supported by a series of examples, gives reasons for disputes and occasionally sheds light on the radical corrections of past "mistakes".
