THE PREDJAMA CASTLE
Not
far from Postojna stands the majestic Predjama Castle. It is
a structure built into a 400 foot (123 m) cliff. The castle
dates back to the 16th century and has a fascinating history.
It is one of the most unique and picturesque castles in the
world.
Even
before this castle was built, there was another castle further
in the cave dating back to 1201.
For centuries robbers and bandits found refuge in the cave.
It is connected to underground passageways and hidden exists
that were excellent hiding places. Inside there is also a constant
supply of running water making life in the cave possible.
The
last known owner of the castle was the robber baron Erazem.
He lived in the castle in the 15th century and died when struck
by a canonball while he was sitting on the toilet. He is considered
to be Slovenia's version of Robin Hood – stealing from the rich
and giving to the poor. However, he had a quarrel with the Emperor
and retreated into the cave, until he was betrayed by his servant
and killed.
The
castle was also used as a refuge during turkish invasions in
the region.
