The basic elements of an international project - building up a modern multilingual dictionary of library terminology - were set and contacts with experts all over Europe established. There was a positive response from 19 countries.

Financial support for the proposed international project was granted by

• the National and University Library in Ljubljana
• the British Council Koeln

Financial sources in particular countries for local translations and editorial work were sought for, successful in many countries.

Recent events and development

Separate contracts were sent to individual authors in particular countries (those who had returned the Basic Information Sheet questionnaire).

A web site on the Multilingual Dictionary of Library Terminology international project was created at URL http://www2.arnes.si/~ljnuk4/multi/multi.html.

The source material for the first segment covering A - C (1.371 entries) was sent to the contractors in printed and in electronic form; untill December it was distributed to 11 countries.

Supporting dictionary material in German, French and Russian was prepared and sent out on demand to particular working groups.

Guidelines setting the common standards for technical procedures and preparation of target language material were elaborated according to multiple suggestions and sent out to cooperating working groups.

The source material for the D - L segment consisting of 1.084 entries in English was prepared for exchange and sent out in printed and in electronic form to 6 cooperating working groups.

The translations/equivalents for the A - C segment had been prepared and returned to the project manager for further processing by 6 working groups.

A trial run was executed converting the files in Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, Estonian, Icelandic and Macedonian (in Cyrillic script).

Successful negotiations resulted in the contract signed with the Open Society Fund Bosnia & Herzegovina for a donation covering the Bosnian language translation.
