In the Posavje region in Bela kranija area the next sorts are to be found:
- recommended: laški rizling, beli pinot, Chardonnay, frankinja (modra frankinja), modri
pinot, šentlovrenka, žametovka, portugalka
- allowed : zeleni silvanec, rumeni muškat, renski rizling, ranina, sauvignon,
kraljevina, žlahtnine, gamay, kerner, zweigelt
Description of the most distinctive sorts of grapes/wines of our
region

Cabernet sauvignon
(Cabernet)
Comes from Bordeaux wine-growing region. The Vine ranks Chardonnay in the red sorts. |

Chardonnay
(Morillon, Baunois)
The French think it belongs in the noblest white sorts. It comes from the French
wine-growing region Burgund. It was first known in the 9th century. |

Laški rizling
(Welschriesling, Olasz Rizling, graševina, Riesling Italico)
Laški rizling is sorted in not real Rieslings and is the most represented in Europe and
in Slovenia. It originates in France (Champagne) and belongs to mid quality wines. |

Renski rizling
(Riesling, Rheinriesling, Riesling Renano)
Renski rizling is used to make white wines. The German School has made it the king of
white wines. |

Modra frankinja
(Blauer Limberger, Blaufräbkisch, frankovka)
If sorted by quality and extend modra frankinja is the main
red sort in Posavje region. It is the base for Metliška črnina and is represented in
Cviček. |

Modra portugalka
(Blauer Portugieser, portugais bleu)
It is preserved only in Bela krajina. From the other sorts it differs because it takes one
year to mature. |

Modri pinot
(modri burganec, Spätburgunder, Pinot Noir)
It originates from Burgund and like Chardonnay it adapts harder to the conditions. It was
first known in 1394. |

Rumeni muškat
(Žuti muškat, Gelber Muskateller, Muscat ŕ Petits Grains)
It is produced in all three regions of Bela krajina. The most known wines come from the
bela krajina, maribor and koper region. It originates from Asia and is the oldest wine
known to man. |

Sivi pinot
(Rulander, Tokay. Burgundske sive, Pinot grigio)
It was created as a mixture of the modri pinot in the vineyard of the merchant Ruland from
Speyer. In Slovenia it is represented in all wine-growing regions and gives the best
wines. |

Šentlovrenka
(Saint Laurent, lovrenac crni)
It originates in France and is probably names after the town Saint-Laurent in Medoc in
Bordeaux. It may have got its name from saint Laurent (10th August), because it matures
early. |

Žametna črnina
(Kölner blauer), kavčina)
Most represented in the Posavje region and is the base for
Cviček and Belokranjski róse. It is also represented in Rdeč bizeljčan, Rdeč
sremičan, Rdeč vrištjančan and Dolenjsko rdeče. It belongs to the sorts with big
grapes which stands out in the low sugar level. |

Sauvignon
(muškatni silvanec, Sauvignon Blanc)
It originates from France and is grown in most of the wine-growing countries. It has big
leaflet and is resistant to low temperatures but sensitive to grey mould. |
Ice wine
The first ice wine made in Slovenia comes from Metlika in Bela krajina. Grapes were
maturing in the vineyard of Agricultural co-operative of Metlika in Vinomer. After the
three days with average night temperature below -7ş C, on the 25th December 1986 the
first vintage took place. To keep the grapes frozen the vintage had to be early in the
morning. |
