A nature park is the least restricted protective group in which we show more attention to nature while the area is still used for farming. In 1988, in the Lahinja nature park  Nerajske and Lahinjske Luge were proclaimed to be natural reservations while the river Lahinja from its spring to the village Pusti Gradec, the brook Nerajčica with the springs Okno, Stjepanec and Krnica, the spring Topličica, the caves Pečina, Pečina (at the mill), Djud and the sinkhole Glušenka were proclaimed natural monuments. In the meander of the Lahinja at Pusti Gradec the archeological area, the Church of All Saints, Klepečevs saw mill, the antique burial ground at the village Šipek and the barow mounds at the village Veliki Nerajec were proclaimed to be cultural monuments.Birch trees
The Lahinja and its tributaries are distinguished for their natural stream, clean water and rich water fauna. Nerajske and Lahinjske Luge are larger swamps, important as the living space of endangered and rare plant and animal species.
In the area a special type of Carst is found, called belokranjski plitvi kras (Bela krajina shallow carst). Here we can admire "draga"s, "zdenc"s, "zajm"s, "zjot"s, "školj"s and "pečina"s, as the locals call the various carst features, while sinkholes and carst springs are also present.
The vegetation is presented by woods of beech trees, grass areas, moisterous meadows, reeds,bent-grass and the typical birch trees.
