KRAS
I am going to tell you something about Kras-Karst. The reason that I chose Kras lies in the fact that our family owns a weekend house in Krajna vas.
Kras is a region which stretches between Sežana and Nova Gorica in the western part of Slovenia . Its charasteristic is mediterranien climate. That means hot and dry summers and cold and wet winters with a cold wind called burja.
By the name Kras most people think of stone, but in reality there is a lot of woods. That is the consequence of organised human endevour. The origin of term kras is in roman word for stone. Characterictical of Kras are also caves.
The most known is Vilenica, the place of annual meetings of middleeuropean writers.
Kras is the land of vineyards. Behind almost every house you can see grapes. The most famous vine of Kras is teran. It is a very sour vine but with specific satisfactory taste.
The second landmark of Kras is specially prepared domestic ham called pršut.
It is best served with the fresh white bread and, of course, teran.
The most famous domestic animal is kraški ovcar, shepherd dog. It was undispensable at shepherding the sheep but unfortunately it is very rare animal these days.
Among Kras celebrities are Kosovel and Spacal. Srecko Kosovel was modern Slovenian poet who died very young before the second world war.
And Lojze Spacal was modern Slovenian painter who died some years ago.
