Content and Role of National Traditions and Values in the Architectural Formation

The aim of this paper is to explain the role of national traditions and values in the development of modern architecture, by the mean of discussing and briefly examining some basic theoretical aspects (formulations) related to the creative nature of architecture and its aesthetic substance as a specific reflection of the objective socio-historical reality. The examination of these general theoretical matters related to the specific character of architecture as an art and as social phenomenon will give the opportunity to penetrate through the sophisticated problems of national traditions, and to trace the right way to re-create them in modern architecture.

The paper will concentrate on the morphological and stimulating functions of national traditions and values in defining the parameters and aspects of the artistic image of architecture and emerging the traditional local know-how. This will be achieved by highlighting principal points of view related to the nature of traditions, the creativity process and its relation with the environment, formation of traditions and values, their elements as well as the basic sources of originality in architectural creativity process.

At the end basic conclusions will be drafted in order to summarize the main findings of this study.
