Along the Traces of the Adriatic Prehistoric House
The abundance of limestone characterising the Croatian coastline and islands, where limestone is found in a ready-to-use format, gave way to the tradition of stone constructions in this area. The paper presupposes that stone was used as the primary building material both for buildings used for dwelling or farming purposes in as early as prehistory when, according to archaeological findings, dry-stone building techniques prevailed. The paper studies the ground plan of prehistoric dwellings, analyses dry-stone constructions found on Croatian islands and the coastline at the foot of the Velebit mountain range and examines the details found on prehistoric tombs, thus attempting at reconstructing the true image of the prehistoric dwelling. The presentation provides pictorial evidence while dating the analysed dwellings on the basis of archaeological findings.
