THE NEED FOR A CRITICAL APPROACH TO THE PROCESS OF THE FORMATION OF SPACE SEEN AS A DYNAMIC IDENTITY
The tradition-innovation dichotomy can be seen as a range of conceptual pairs, such as old v. new, traditional v. innovative, intuitive v. empirical, romantic v. rational, relative v. objective, unconscious v. conscious, organic v. mechanic, identity-related v. neutral. Conventionally, these pairs are seen as polar opposites representing incompatible extremes. Yet, a careful examination of the pairs reveals their complementarity, interdependency and dynamic unity. This revelation enables us to find a balance between the two extremes, i. e. the innovative character of the eternally modern. The most important task then is to find the modern component in our own time, society and space. Once we have achieved that, we shall be capable of recognising it at any point throughout historical moments characterised by constant development.
Top-quality examples of the innovative character of the eternally modern - several of which can be found in the Upper Sava Valley - thus illustrate the direct and indirect links between the conventional ostinato and the fresh melody of the demands of modern man. Non-sensical, even grotesque solutions often function as invaluable teaching material.
The most successful works in modern architecture have been created through a critical analysis of the past and the re-use of the elements that are relevant today as well, and through the past-present analogy process on the basis of which a vision of the future is made. These impressive, recognisable and applicable works finally become an intrinsic part of all of us.
