THE NOTION OF LOCAL DEVELOPMENT AND THE DRY STONE CONSTRUCTION IN ALGERIA AND THE EVENT OF NEW WORLD ORDER

This paper deals with the relationship between nature and the concept of work (labor) and the system of social values in the traditional Berber (northern mountain region of Algeria) architecture. The empirical focus on which this paper rests is the notion of cooperative and collective work called "touiza" (especially of dry stone construction of the house). The implications of this system of construction in the architecture of the Berber village will be related to the notion of local development at a time when the world is coming to accept that global environmental issue are a major priority of international concern while it is obvious that the next century (21st) we will see that the world development will be based on a sustainable development instead of industrial one. The sustainable development will be implemented by the cultural patrimony as well as availability of local natural building material and the local "know how" of individuals.
