All artists featured in the exhibition were born and brought up in Eastern Europe and at somewhat similar times. Some of them now live elsewhere resulting in heterogeneous life experiences and perspectives that are discernible in their works: territories and sense of belonging, heroes and symbols of consciousness, historical pains and remedies, transnational pop culture and a jesting tone of voice, flowing images and daily reflections etc. All these are manifested through various mediums and techniques.
Looking at these works, it becomes evident that it is impossible to pinpoint what exactly constitutes Eastern European visual dimensions, not only since the Eastern European diaspora has scattered across the world, but also because each country in Eastern Europe has its own recollection and “Eastern European experience”. This exhibition is not simply an expression that serves to extend the concept of “Eastern Europe”; the most important things to note are probably the unique context within which each individual artist operates, and also how the artist handles images.
