The Socerb Castle

The Socerb Castle is a medieval castle built in 13th century on top of a steep rock.
The area where the castle stands has prehistoric, Roman and medieval settlements. The castle belonged to the Venitian Republic for 500 years. Then it became part of Austria and the Habsburg Monarchy.

In 1780 it was damaged by a fire and then partially reconstructed in 1924-25. The view from the castle is breath-taking. You can see the nearby Gulf of Triest and the valleys of Istria. Under the castle there is the well-known Cave of Sveta Jama (Sacred Cave). In the olden days it was a chapel for praying.
