Project meeting  in Šenčur,  3rd – 8th March 2006

The three participating schools in the project, divided by many miles  and by different educational systems, yet our respective countries joined the European union in the same year (2004), tried to find out the similarities by analysing the articles in respectable national daily papers: Lithuanian LIETUVOS RYTAS, Polish GAZETO WYBORCZA and Slovenian DELO.

A group of Slovene nine graders had to read the papers and analyse the intrenational events, mainly the articles published between 1st – 14th December. The same was done in Lithuania and Poland.

At the project meeting  in Šenčur it was established that:

§  the European union budget intended for the new members  was  not very favourable so our three countries requested more solidarity and their efforts paid off to everybody’s content.

§  each of the above mentioned papers discussed and demanded investigations about the possible CIA prisons located in Europe. The most frequent suspicions  were connected with Polish Mazovian lakes and the opportunity to discuss human rights violation and the politicians’ responsibilities arose.

§  what seems to be of a historical moment for the Slovenes, i.e. the OSCE (The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) conference in Ljubljana, prooved as an unimportant piece of news for Poland or Lithuania.

§  the 1st December, International AIDS day, lacked articles on AIDS – obviously people got used to living with it.

§  unfortunately, the Human Rights Day, December 10th, went by almost imperceptibly The  European Ombudsman  report was published only in the Slovenian paper. Interestingly enough, the article on Belgium, where homosexual couples were allowed to adopt children, seemed to be of interest in all three countries.

§  European swimming championship occupied sports pages in  the three papers while the Slovene and the Polish also reported from the  Harrachow’s ski-jumping competition  and the Lithuanians enjoyed the European Basketball Euroleague, basketball being their national sport. As far as the culture was concerned, all the papers issued articles on Berlin Film Festival.

The research will be accurately introduced in the brochure in May.

The meeting in Šenčur gave us yet another  opportunity to show   our Lithuanian and Polish friends places of interest such as Olimje monastery, Rogatec museum, Lake Bled  and  the capital Ljubljana. Our guests were pleasantly surprised by a presentation of a traditional potica baking, which was lovingly presented by Mr and Mrs Krišelj. The guests were able to participate in the actual making of the potica.

Each of the guests was given a potica earthenware  mould together with a recipe and we parted with a promise to enjoy potica at the next meeting in Vilnius.
