Aurora in Slovenia January 21, 2005
Large and complex active region AR 10720 produced a major X7.1/2B proton flare at 07:01 UTC on January 20, 2005. Although off-center, a large and fast full halo CME was observed in LASCO imagery (at the time suffering greatly
under the intense radiation storm). CME shock front impacted late on January 21 (18 UTC), with strong IMF of almost 40 nT, high density and speed (in excess of 1000 km/s) and erratic Bz. Kp index reached 8 and the storm lasted 15 hours.
Unfortunately, a potentially fairly impressive display was greatly hindered by an almost full Moon high in the sky. Nevertheless, several observers observed and photographed auroral activity during the UTC evening of January 21.
If you also observed the aurora borealis (aka northern lights) from Slovenia, please send a report by e-mail!

Location: Kostanjevec (46.39N, 15.52E)
UTC Time and Date: 21.01.2005 - 19:01 (4 hours 43 minutes)
Observer: Javor Kac
Limiting magnitude: +5.8
Light pollution: low
Cloudiness: 0%
Limiting magnitude at the location of aurora: ca +5
Auroral activity: very low
Elevation of activity: 18 degrees
Types of activity:
(diffuse glow)
Comments: The most intense wave of acitvity came
at 19:01 UT with aurora extending from azimuth
330 to 030 and up to 18 degrees in altitude. The
aurora was seen until 19:22 UT. Aurora was again
picked up at 21:12 UT, centered at azimuth 020
and reaching to 12 degrees above the horizon.
This wave was seen until 21:25 UT. From 22:15 to
22:45 a very faint glow was seen above northern
horizon. From 23:35 to 23:44 there was again
a barely discernible glow from azimuth 350 to 030.
Location: Tunjice (N46.14, E14.32)
UTC Time and Date: 21.01.2005 - 19:05 (10 minutes)
Observer: Rok Palcic
Light pollution: low
Moon influence: high
Cloudiness: 0%
Auroral activity: medium to very low
Elevation of activity: 15 degrees
Types of activity:
(diffuse glows)
Comments: Quite intense activity with 15 degrees
over Alps which are quite high above horizon
(12 degrees) were seen from 19:05 until 19:15 UT
when red glare dissapeared. During that period
aurora was seen as red glare moving from azimuth
010 to 350 and then suddenly dissapeared. Some
activity (some faint light few degrees above
mountains) were present and observed until
20:30 UT. Then we did not observe any more.
Before 19:05 UT I didn't observe as well:(
