In this paper I want to draw attention to the organization of public and private archival institutions in the Republic of Slovenia focusing on the Archive of the Republic of Slovenia, the central national archival institution, which is maintaining important national archival cultural heritage from the 9th century up to now. The Archives and Archival Institutions Act of 1997 together with six implementing regulations of 1999 meticulously defines the tasks of public archival institutions, especially the conditions of accessibility and use of archival material. The latter is of great importance for the users of archival material, and for genealogists as well.

Besides the knowledge of search room rules, which regulate the use of archival material in search rooms, it is the most important information for all researchers and users the one on particular material they intend to research. General data on archival material in Slovene archival institutions are available in guidebooks to archive groups and collections, also available on the Internet. In this paper I want to draw attention to archival material in the Archive of the Republic of Slovenia which is an important source for genealogical research, such as registers of births, deaths and marriages, terriers, cadastres, land registers, censuses, and numerous collections of personal data.
