Traditional Clay Roof Covering

The discovery of fireclay and its advantages goes back several millenniums. Initially, the design was primitive. The Middle Ages, however, already saw the usage of roof covering in the shape of a beaver's tail, i.e. plain tiles. Plain tiles were used as roof covering for castles, churches, monastries and mansions, thus making a strong impact on architectural heritage. Old-town centres, sacred buildings and the majority of castles have been associated with plain tiles, also known as the royal roof covering.

Modern industry and technologies implemented several changes in the production of clay roof covering. New shapes, techniques and colours were thus discovered. Tondach was first introduced to the Slovene community of experts in vernacular architecture at the 9th Alps-Adria conference on vernacular architecture when the author focused his presentation on heavy capital investments claiming that the Tondach company would succeed in preserving its attitude towards architectural heritage. The paper acknowledges that the above-mentioned aim has been achieved. Tondach has mantained its undeniable quality, rich assortment and colour variety, as well as individuality in design, but most of all, has succeeded in producing a 100 per cent clay product in spite of its completely automatised production methods.

Tondach prides itself on the company's tradition and the preservation of the Slovene tradition. This leading company on the Slovene market can only hope to continue on its road to success also in the future.
