Reconstruction of a historic Kelter (Power-press) into a cultural Shed, in Kuernbach (Baden-Wuerttemberg)

The town-development of Kürnbach has been underway for 35 years. The recent conservation of the old "Badischen Kelter", which stands under protection, has proved to be an important task. A few years ago in the same area, the existing Hessenkelter was restored. It is being used as a hall in which events are held during summer.

The "Badische Kelter" stands directly at the Marketplace, near the church and city hall. The building has great cultural significance. On top of its built history, the "Badischen Kelter" also has great significance in relation to the town history. Together with the "Hessenkelter", the "Badische Kelter" stands today as evidence of the co-rulership in the town of Kürnbach.

The conservation of the "Badischen Kelter" has top priority. The buildings history and its budget must be taken into consideration when finding a functional and purposeful solution. One would need to consider the multi-functional possibilities of a "cultural shed", as local events, meetings, visitor activities and classes should be able to be housed here. Furthermore wine seminars , exhibitions and family festivities should be possible. A Diploma submission at the University of Stuttgart resulted in the development of the first concrete vision for a design, which was then discussed with the council. The pre-design was based on the council’s early visions, in which the extension (lobby and entrance, stairway to gallery) has been designed in a steel/glass construction. In many discussions with the conservation group and the council, the building’s extension, with ist intruding glass structure, was modified. Construction should be realised in 2002. Existing structure, goal orientation, planning structure and plans will be presented and discussed.
