The Development of Carpenter-Made Wooden Joints

The theoretical principles of crafts originate from the past and are related to vernacular architecture. As such, they form part of heritage and are applicable even today. The paper focuses on the development of carpentry and wooden connections.

Wooden connections aim at interlinking wooden parts, thus creating a new product, and transfer force from one element to another. The development of connections went parallel to the development of tools. Improvements of tools created opportunities for the introduction of decorative changes in basic wooden constructions.

The origins of carpentry can only be traced back to the introduction of iron tools. Carpenter-made wooden connections are first encountered in wooden constructions and roofing. Most of the wooden constructions have been developed by carpenters through the adaptation of former connections to changes in various conditions and demands. Each geographical area thus developed its own wooden connections that met the demands of environment and time.

Expertise in theoretical principles of the technological development of wooden connections and respect for the quality of design can only result in the formation of an interruptible link between tradition and modern wooden constructions.
