Approaches to the Habitation of Vernacular-Architecture Masters

The life and progress of the perception of space in the architectural heritage of countryside and towns, depend on whether there live creative and industrious people. The habitation, seen as a way of reviving the space, involves architectonic dimensions as well. When its construction is approached by vernacular-architecture masters, who may not be architects by profession, an analysis of a new perception of space, time and culture is made possible.

Various approaches to the flat take inspiration from a wide variety of vernacular architectural formats in order to create the habitation where the dwelling and working areas may be combined with a garden, which is a reproduction of handmade houses combined with the flexibility of vernacular architecture techniques, or which functions as a cottage that has preserved the elements of regional architecture.

The habitation art is the art of a space in constant creation, reconstruction and reinterpretation of traditional construction techniques and approaches, thus resembling the land art and reflecting the influences of vernacular architecture on major architectural programmes and interventions. The paper will illustrate a selection of ten projects, and explain their significance and evaluation in the context of the architectural heritage of the 20th century.
