Traditional Uses of Stone as a Building Material in Serrenti on Sardegna / I

Stone is the second most widespread building material of Sardinian vernacular architecture after earth. It was employed in the construction of plinths in mud buildings, as a structural element in portals and arches of loggias, and also in the form of cobbles for paving courtyards and streets. The nature of stone in use in vernacular earthen buildings of the region of Campidano vary according to the local availability and to geology. But this paper will only consider one representative type. The reason for choosing to study in more detail the stone quarried in Monte Atzorcu near the village Serrenti, lies in its popularity and on the degree of use in mud-brick buildings of the area around the village. This stone was also extracted in neighbouring quarries and carted to the surrounding communities.
Structure of the paper:
1. Quarries and stoneyards
2. Extraction and cutting
3. Tools for quarrying and dressing of the stone
4. Traditional conservation methods
The paper and the survey of tools for the quarrying and dressing of the stone of Serrenti has been carried out with the help of the following craftsmen: Giuseppe Medda (quarryman, b.1927), Erminio Putzu (stone mason, b. 1927), Pietro Tiddia (stone mason, b. 1929), and Antonio Argiolas (stone mason, b. 1938).
