Overall results of our research

On this page You may find links to pages where you can see all the results of our research 'Value which means a lot to me', which we did from December 1997 to March 1998. We believe that our moral Values are among the most important and misused categories in our lives, so we decided to do something with it. We hope that our work will have some impact on people who come across it in a way to make Our World a Better Place to Live In. Since data analises can be subjective, we introduce you with only the most obvious outcomes. We leave other things to your imagination and your reasoning.

The Overall Results based on received data until March 31th

Biggest surprise is that environmental awareness is rating very low, while concern for health is ranking very high. It shows that our civilization is behaving very irresponsible. We understand that contradiction as a child disease of our civilization which has to be considered most seriously with most possible care. Someone said it wisely : ' we borrowed the world from our children, not inherit it from our ancestors.' Or as Mrs. B.M.Pozarnik put it : ' The gap between declarations and real action- double morality, which has far bigger impact on youth than all good advises '
Things like fortune, destiny or basic needs were also important for many who answered our survey. Among other values which were not mentioned in our survey, by far the most important was LOVE, especially among young population. It was what we expected. The Overall results showed that Family life is the most respected value. We expected such results, since the family is the only place where one can find support and understanding. For the most people it is a place where one can find a shelter.
Right behind the Family values, there are Friendship and Health and in our country Health is much more respected value than Family life. That was a kind of surprise. We assume that the difference is based on tradition, since a majority of the surveys we got from all over the world were from the U.S.

Differences between sexes

According to collected data, female population has different value hierarchy than male population. A closer look shows differences between sexes concerning such important item as Values. We were quite surprised with the results. Friendship is nearly twice as important to the female population, while Pleasure is more than twice as important to male population. One more curiosity: Family Values are more important to the male population. The differences are statistically very high among all values except on Peace and Freedom.

Age differences

We assumed that differences among different age groups were sustainable and so it was! Pay attention to the dispersion of data among different age groups. There are the biggest possible differences in values like Health, Friendship, Family and Pleasure, while there are no statistically important differences at all in values like Money, Freedom, Religion and other values. The only quite normal difference is in Tolerance.

Differences between Slovenia and USA

Since most answers came from the USA, we decided to make a comparisson between them. Values like Freedom, Religion, Peace, Environment and Tolerance are more important for Americans. Values like Pleasure, Friendship and Health appears to be more important for Slovenians. The two seems to agree about the importance of Family Life only. Interesting, isn't it ?

Regional Results ( Slovenia only)

In our country, Friendship is the most respected value. Health and family life are very close. However, other values are statisticaly not so important. It is interesting that Friendship is the most respected value in Slovenia for last ten years or so, since there have been similar researches in the past, so we had a chance to compare the hierarchy of values through relatively long period of time. We believe that such outcome is a result of a tradition in our country.

Differences between Slovenia and other countries

In Slovenia, Friendship, Health and Family values are more respected than in other countries, while Religion, Peace and Freedom are much more respected values in other countries.

Other Values

59 participants chose other values which were not included in the survey. By far the most important among them is Love, which was not included in the survey. Love, which is most certanly one among the highest respected values, was not included in the survey also becouse we used it as a control value to check the statistical importance of the objectivity while answering the survey. Since 3 % of participants decided to add Love to other non-mentioned values, we assume that the survey was quite sustainable.
