Dr. Franc Močnik (1814-1892) was born in Cerkno (pr' Paulietu, nowadays pr' Jamšeku). His numerous textbooks in mathematics for primary schools are very known in the wide world. Some old Slovenian words used in his books are collected.

Leopold Karl Schulz von Strassnitzki taught at the Ljubljana lyceum in the period 1827-1834 and he inspired Močnik to study mathematics.
In Gorica, Močnik met with Augustin-Louis Cauchy, a great French mathematician.
