ABSTRACT ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION AND ITS ROLE IN THE EVALUATION OF VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE

Research and preservation of vernacular architecture should involve experts in different sciences, all of them bearing in mind that all the branches of knowledge are of equal importance.

The understanding of vernacular architecture thus involves the study of its development and the mastering of architectural professional skills. A mere numbering of architectural and decorative elements on a building does not suffice for a thorough and credible evaluation.

One of the most important fine-art features of vernacular architecture can be found in its tectonics which reflects logical assembling of elements with a flair for construction. The facade is therefore always, irrespective of the window design, a logical and static connection between the roof and the ground. In vernacular architecture, the tectonic design, which is so typical of historical architecture, can be observed in its most rudimentary form. The tectonic principle should be therefore taken into consideration whenever evaluating vernacular architecture. Furthermore, it should represent the starting point for a modern renovation with or without annex of the existing facade.
