SCHIRNERHaUS. THE HOUSE WITH smokeroom, REVIVED AGAIN FOR VISITORS

The smoke house (the main room in a Corinthian peasant house), informally "Schirner" in Piregg 45 near Birkfeld in east Austria's Styria first appears in documents in 1402. When the new residential premises were finished in 1977, the old house was emptied and left to decay. On Provincial restorer dr. Bouvier's initiative and in co-operation with organization "Laurenziberg-Komitee" in 1992 we started works on the renovation, ending them in 1993. The house was thus returned to its primary state. Rossinger's movie, filmed in the house, made it famous all over the province. The house is now used as a museum and is witness to the old vernacular cultures.
