Educating for Understanding and Continuity of Vernacular Architecture
The paper tries to present the complex variety that should to be built in all kinds of education if we want to keep on or even to develop the understanding and protection of the qualities of vernacular architecture as architectural heritage. On one side it is possible to prove that the abandoning of education of specialists on all levels minimise the possibility of physical preservation of vernacular architecture. On the other side because of inadequate or minimal knowledge about the values and importance of vernacular architecture within the education process in elementary schools, the ability of laymen in creative collaboration or evaluation of the aims in preservation, revitalisation or building is practically none. But these people are at the same time the owners and investors... Because of the specifics of the actual development of Europe and of the countries in transition, one part of paper is dedicated to the problems of exceeding the ideological components of education - today politicians still underestimate or too much pride the values of vernacular architecture or employ it for their political use.
The paper opens also the questions about the efficiency of new or revitalised traditional methods in education - from basic school frames to the new (or future) postinformative systems.
