Introduction
With
this retrospective presentation of his graphic opus, Bogdan Borčić has once
again proved and confirmed his vital role, both as a firm artistic identity, as
well as in regard of his cardinal contribution to the corporate image of the
‘Ljubljana graphic school’ and his irreplaceable bearing in the formation of
contemporary graphic art expression in general. Inventive artist, successful
pedagogue, co-creator of both the domestic and the international fine art scene
for decades, with his creations he offers to viewers and experts alike an
insight into exquisite variety. Regardless of the period of his creativity, or
the cycle of his graphic works, the results point unanimously to his maturity
and steadfast belief in the power of graphic art stretched to its margins – and
frequently even exceeding the framework of the possible. We can discern the
artist’s exquisite sensibility from the very beginnings of his
figurative-poetic-fantastic phase, and then follow it to his manly period
dedicated to intellectual preoccupations. Emotional experiences of the world
were gradually pushed aside by fresh cerebral combinations leading to a
profound satisfaction of the contemplative spirit while resolving them without
excess. As a distinct minimalist in the latest phases of his artistic
creativity, and despite his mathematically-marked starting points, he has
remained poetic in his perceptions and emotions. He knows how to extract new
sensibility from substance, to pour it from the plate to the paper. In the
confrontation of the two auras, the artist’s suggestiveness has given an
important new role to paper and its use, extracting from it the greatest amount
of its power and capacity. He has found the paper that suits him perfectly, and
elevated it to an important co-creative element. The prints composed in the
most recent period, ripe in perfectly rounded wholeness, reveal the essence of
the relationships of tension within the visual structure framed in the two
pulsating dimensions of the graphic print.
We are satisfied that the retrospective exhibition has been proposed for the
accompanying programme of the 23rd International Biennial of Graphic Art in
Ljubljana, for Bogdan Borčić had always exhibited his works in this framework,
and he was also awarded for it.
