YELLOW GROUP (JOBS)
RED GROUP (ADJECTIVES)
GREEN GROUP (FOOD)
BLUE GROUP(PRESENT SIMPLE & PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSES)
WHO IS THE GAME FOR?
You can use it for revising vocabulary and grammar in the class, but
I recommend it for extra lessons, since some questions can be quite difficult
or tricky.
HOW LONG IS THE GAME?
Pupils will probably not be able to finish it in one lesson. In this
case you have two possibilities:
1. Ask pupils to count their money and the worth of the fields. The
one with the highest amount of money wins.
2. Ask pupils to write down how much money they have and which fields
they have bought. In this way they will be able to continue playing the
game the next time.
WHAT IS IT FOR?
Pupils practise and revise vocabulary (jobs, food) and grammar (present
simple, present continuous tenses and adjectives). They also practise their
reading and listening skills.
WHAT HAPPENS IF NONE OF THE PUPILS KNOWS THE CORRECT ANSWER?
The teacher gives the correct answer, but all the players in this group
must pay the full price of the field.
WHAT IS THE TEACHER'S ROLE IN THE GAME?
The teacher makes sure everybody speaks only English (by then, pupils
know all the needed vocabulary to play a board game). If the pupils do
not speak English, they must give $20 to each player in the group. The
teacher is also the "judge" and helps pupils in case they are not sure
about the corectness of their answer.
TEACHER'S PREPARATION:
The teacher must re-write the numbers and letters from the front to
the back of the cards.
THINGS THAT EACH GROUP WILL NEED:
a monopoly board
a set of blue, yellow, green and red cards
paper money
a dice
a different token for each player
RULES OF THE GAME:
-
Students are in groups of 4 - 5.
-
Each player gets $1500. Each player gets:
5 bank notes for $1
7 bank notes for $5
7 bank notes for $10
7 bank notes for $20
5 bank notes for $50
5 bank notes for $100
1 bank notes for $500
The rest of the money is in the "bank".
-
The group decides for a player to be in charge of the bank.
-
Players throw the dice; the one who throws the highest number starts
the game.
-
When players land on a field that has not been bought before, they
must try to buy it.
-
When players land on a field that has already been bought, they must
answer the question given by the owner. If they give the correct answer,
they pay the owner half of the price the owner paid for the field. But
if they do not answer the question correctly, they must pay the owner the
full price of the field.
-
If players land on "JAIL" they miss a turn.
-
If players land on "ADVANCE TO GO" they move their token to "GO",
but do not collect $100.
-
Every time players pass "GO" (except as stated above), they collect
$100 from the bank.
HOW TO BUY A FIELD?
When a player lands on, let say, the "JOB" field, he must try to buy
it. He picks the card No. 1 from the yellow pack, reads the question and
tries to answer it. If he gives the correct answer, he pays the bank for
the field (in this case $80). In this way he also buys the rest of the
three cards that go with this field (1.a, 1.b, 1.c). If the player does
not know the right answer, or gives the wrong one, he pays the bank half
of the price of the field ($40 for this particular field).
WHAT HAPPENS IF A PLAYER LANDS ON A FIELD OWNED BY ANOTHER PLAYER?
In this case the owner asks him a question written on a card he got
when he bought the field. If the player gives the correct answer, he pays
the owner half of the price of the field, because the owner allowes him
to rest on his field. But if the player's answer is wrong, or if he doesn't
give the answer at all, he must pay the owner the full price of the field.
