ALGORITMI
Slikovno polje
temu fragmentu
sicer dodeli samostojnost in koherentnost, vendar nakazuje
možnost razraščanja in vzpostavlja dinamično dialektiko med
zaključenim
in nezaključenim, končnim in neskončnim, kjer se možnost
nadaljevanja lahko manifestira samo z zaključenostjo slikovne
formulacije.
Podobe so namreč vedno
ponavljata.
spremenjena. Pri tem raziskovanju vizualne fleksibilnosti
in spremenljivosti istega motiva avtorica izkoristi tehnološki
pripomoček in uporabi računalniško grafiko, ki dopušča enostavno
izvedljivo, a kompleksno manipulacijo. Računalniški program
omogoča multipliciranje, dodajanje, odvzemanje in spreminjanje
velikosti, proporcev, barvnih poudarkov in tonov ter druge
intervencije, ki izbran slikovni fragment hitro in učinkovito
preoblikujejo.
in postaja del nove vzorčaste strukture.
Krhke in
občutljive linearne splete tkejo tudi avtoričine perorisbe,
ki predstavljajo
drugi pol njene ustvarjalnosti. Kljub geometrijski podstati
V prepletu črt, drobnih zamikih in ‘napakah’,
in monotonega značaja računalniške grafike in kaže razliko
in stanj.
v kontinuiteti in ponovitvah vpisuje trajanje brez začetka
in konca.

ALGORITHMS
Nives Palmić is an artist who, regardless of the technique she chooses - digital
graphics or pen and ink - always explores the changeable character of form.
Her work is reminiscent of woven patterns which create
an impression of continuity, which is why the insertion
of pictorial elements seems like an intrusion into duration
and like a random snippet of some larger whole. While the fragment acquires
independence and coherence within the visual field, the
latter implies the possibility of expansion, and establishes
a dynamic dialectic between the complete and incomplete,
the finite and infinite, in which the possibility of continuance
can be manifested only through the totality of visual formulation.
This fragmentary logic, an essential characteristic of
the artist’s images, is also present in their internal
structure
as a basic building principle. She always bases her images
on one or a combination of two fragments, which present
a starting point and are replicated in various sequences,
rhythms and variations. Interestingly,
a fragment - usually a stylised floral motif or an abstract painting - is
often torn from the
artist’s former, fully formed visual image, and transposed into a new context,
where it is assigned an entirely different role. In her exploration of visual
flexibility and the changeability of the same motif, the artist avails herself
of technology, using computer graphics which, notwithstanding their simplicity,
facilitate complex manipulation. The computer programme enables multiplication,
addition and erasure, as well as changing dimensions, proportions, hues,
and tones,
and other interventions that swiftly and efficiently transform the chosen
fragment. Computer graphics thus serve to reinterpret the classic painting
medium, which loses its character through digital manipulation and is, as
a reminiscence, preserved only in the details of one or two different basic
visual components which constitute a whole. As her building blocks, Palmić
uses
squares exclusively, which correspond to the digital structure of pixels;
yet on the inside they often break up into smaller units, creating an impression
of a raster which
deconstructs the composition of the optical experience. At the same time,
the square appears as a painting within a painting, shedding its identity
as it multiplies, and becoming a part of a new pattern structure. The sequential
series of various rhythms, intervals, magnifications and minimisations,
along with the sequence of colour values, creates a pulsating effect, which
mesmerises
the gaze and every so often borders on op-art.
The artist’s pen and ink
drawings, too, weave delicate linear mazes, which present her other creative
side. Despite their geometrical basis, they are endowed with softness
and an organic character, because they are hand drawn. The
entwined lines,
tiny digressions and “errors” generated through multiplication by a human
hand, which trembles occasionally, contradict the mechanical, artificial
and monotonous character of computer graphics, and this relationship
reveals the differences between the two media. The order
now becomes less conspicuous
and, despite the apparent simplicity of the pattern, intersections of
forms are generated, which pervade the visual field, expanding
outwards.
Nives Palmić’s pattern code is transformed into a complex
matrix, which is more than a mere aesthetic cover, but rather
a signifier of various associations, emotions
and states. Here, allusion to ornamentation is the ideal vehicle, inscribing,
through continuity and repetition, duration with neither
a beginning nor an end.
