TRIGLAV – SLOVENIAN SYMBOL

Triglav is the highest mountain in Slovenia and has been a national symbol for more than a century. Its role became more important at the end of 19th and at the beginning of 20th century when Slovenia was ruled by Germans. In that time Slovenia's Alps became one of important »batlle fields« where identity of Slovenian nation was built. The most important person at taht time was Jakob Aljaz, a priest who managed to buy the summit of Triglav and a land below the top where he built the Kredarica mountain hut, the highest mountain hut in Slovenian Alps. Therefore it is like a maxim that every true Slovenian has to stand on top of Triglav at least once in a lifetime although most of people who climb Triglav do not know much about this historical roots any more. Because of this maxim very diverse people go to Triglav - from experienced climbers to people who don't have any relation to the mountains and nature, from oldest to youngest mountaineers. The 2684 meters high Triglav summit is not so difficult to reach in the summer (it can be quite hard in the winter) and so it is overcrowded almost every day in July and August.
