MACLEOD WHISKY TOURNEY AWARD 2002

This year’s Whisky Tourney asked for helpmates in 2 with twinning where a piece moved from one BK flight to a non-adjacent flight of a different colour. The 41 entries were judged for solving difficulty by Jonathan Mestel and Graham Lee, and for artistic merit by John Rice and Michael McDowell. Difficulty turned out to be a greater factor in determining the award, with some of the more artistic problems proving easily solved. Our thanks to all who competed.

1st  PRIZE (GLENFIDDICH) Hans Peter REHM, bernd ellinghoven and Hans GRUBER

A problem which gained almost maximum marks for difficulty. The opening moves neutralize guards on the mating squares and are followed by sacrifices to give the BK access. The Zilahi is neat and the effect of the twinning mechanism is interesting.

2nd  PRIZE (ISLAY)  Helmut ZAJIC

A nice example of the Zajic theme, with the WB and R exchanging mating and guarding functions.

3rd  PRIZE (FAMOUS GROUSE) Dieter MÜLLER

Another problem which kept the solvers occupied. First move unpins allow White to guard flights while forcing a black selfblockes.
