Three hundred years of primary schooling in Ravne na Koroškem

Abstract

The paper illustrates three hundred years of elementary school at market place Guštanj (since 1952 town Ravne na Koroškem). The school was established on the ground of substantial bequest (for the teachers and pupils) of the parish priest Gašper Pillat in the year 1700. So this school belongs to three oldest educational institutions in Slovenian Carinthia (Slovenj Gradec 1228, Vuzenica 1356). Until 1874 it existed as one – class school to become a five – class one already in the year 1902. The next step in its progress was reached in the new state – the kingdom of Yugoslavia when it became a six – class school. The first school house was built as late as in 1862. Before this the classes were held in the church and industrial premises. Later the new schools were built in 1910 and 1966. The additional school house was necessary in 1978 to found the second elementary school in the town. Until the end of the Austrian monarchy in 1918 the language of instruction was strictly German in spite of the fact that about three quarters of pupils were Slovenians.
