Ilirska Bistrica was prevailingly a trade and commerce centre up to the World War Two, owing to its long tradition of saws and mills by the Bistrica brook. In the 19th century Bistrica developed quickly and grew from a small village into a borough. The development was even more conspicuous after the year 1873 when the railway Pivka - Reka was built.

Various societies and associations were founded

- the National Reading Club in the year 1864,

- the Firemen's Association in the year 1886,

- the Gym Club "Sokol"

and the Mounteneers' Association in the year 1907.

During this period interesting middle class buildings were built in the old part of the town.

The event of great importance happened in the year 1899 with the start - up of the first Carnolian factory of pastry, called PEKATETE, the owner of which was ANTON ZNIDERSIC.
