| Gorazd Humar THE STONE GIANT ON THE RIVER SOČA
In this book the author Gorazd Humar civil engineer, describes the way of building the large-size railway arch stone bridge over the river Soča in the vicinity of Solkan, Slovenia and its history. The bridge has 85 m main arch span which makes it the largest stone arch railway bridge in the world. The bridge was built in 1905 and the traffic of the second railway connection of Vienna and Central Europe with the port of Trieste began to run back in 1906. The building of the Solkan bridge, as it is called nowadays, also meant the end of millenniums of big stone bridge construction as the first big concrete bridges were already gaining ground reaching 100 m span in 1910. The Solkan bridge, a top - level product of the Austrian civil engineering school for bridge construction was one of the last that was built between the 19th and the 20th century in Austro - Hungarian Empire. The book offers interesting readings about the both Austrian engineers who designed and built the bridge. The Isonzo Front battles during World War I proved to be fatal for the bridge. During the battles for Gorizia in August, 1916 the main arch was blown up. A temporary steel construction built in 1918 made the railway traffic possible till 1927 when the Italian National Railways, under whose management was the bridge, reconstructed the arch. This work, rather incomprehensible today, deserves all respect. Also after reconstruction the Solkan bridge remains largest railway stone arch bridge worldwide regardless of the many air raids during World War II. The author Gorazd Humar also gives a description of other railway and other large - size stone bridges in the world and defines the Solkan bridge the largest engineer work in stone bridge construction at all. The book depicts in an interesting way the development of the civil engineering in bridge construction and describes the history of stone bridge construction since its beginnings.
