Village Fokovci
Fokovci is tipical Goričko village which lays on aprx. 325 m height above the sea level on the northeast part of Goričko. The village is set by individual hamlets of grouped houses. There is 88 house numbers where live 245 inhabitants who run farms or go to work to Murska Sobota, Prosenjakovci or making manufacture. So in Fokovci we have a car repairman, joiner, flower shop and a pub, and also Fruit growing Community. Farmers make most of their income with stockbreeding and selling the milk.
Village Fokovci is postal, trade and school centre. So there is a post office, agriculture shop, nursery and school. There aren't any cultural sights of a town in the exact centre, but there is Roman rotunda in near Selo.
Village Fokovci (Fokuc - Folkus) was first mentioned in the year 1346 when the valley of St. Nikolay is mentioned (Roman rotunda in Selo s named after him). Written material from that time is saved at the museum in Brno in Czechoslovakia. In the times of Romans there was a paved road going thru the village making he shortest conection between Rome and Budimpest. After the year 1850 they started to teach poor children in the village. Teacher was paid by special fond to teach children of the poor at their homes. They were taught especially about fruit and wine growing, distillery and other manufacture trades. In the year 1871 the Primary School was built which was intended by children from local villages. At the graveyard was in the year 1911 bulit the bell tower with three bells, which were seized in the first world war and remelted into cannons. The importance of learning was seen clear already in the beginning of the 20th century by having 15 manufacturers (today 4). Important tradesmen by that time were: potters, smiths, cartwrighters, shoemakers and Jews with butchery, catering and trade.
In the year 1925 they rebuild the bells at the bell tower. The village Fokovci was under the Hungarian authority called Urdomb - Masters Hill. The village was at that time presented as the headquarters of community. In the same year the Fire brigade was found. During the 2nd world war the village fell under the Hungarian occupation. In the year 1945 the village was set free by the Red brigade together with partisan Prekmurje squad. Electrification was set in the year 1956. Together with founded agriculture cooperative and school headquarters the village presents the centre of lifes during all that time. In the years of developments of industry and economy the number of residents has fallen quickly, because young families had moved from the town to industrial developed cities leaving behind the elder. Today when the jobs in the industry are hard to get, many young people choose to stay at the farms and continue with modern farming. The village lately aquires with important modern infrastructure and we can hope that life will get back in places of difficult access.
Although the village doesn't have any famous sights, it is worth of visit thru the whole year. In the spring and summer it is nice to cycle on arranged cycle track which leads thru Fokovci, and adore the individual hamlets along the valley and hills. In the rich autumn you can pick mushrooms and chestnuts in the local woods, take a walk within vineyards on the south sides of the hills, try new wine and pick apples at the orchard. After the short walk it is very nice to sit at the local pub in chat with natives about everyday stuff.
