I have a strong need to express myself, to express myself here and now, directly! That is my character as a person and as an artist. I would rather call it character than strategy. I have the impression that I am dealing with the subjects I feel I have to deal with / I deeply need to deal with. I'm interested in provoking the opening of one's mind or perception to something that s/he has not thought of, or has not experienced, or was not aware of before. Although my experience tells me that art cannot change social or political reality, in my opinion, it is very important that art is not apolitical, as politicians would love it to be. Art sometimes points to or opens up certain questions, possibly even offering systems of values different from current mainstream trends. Those strategies, in my opinion, can be developed both in public and in a very private context. To break the silence of events, to speak of experience however bitter or lacerating, to put into words (or action), is to discover the hope that these words may be heard, and then when heard, may be judged. This hope of course is the origin of prayer.1 My inner landscape has been transformed with nine years of political turmoil and war in Yugoslavia. My identity as an artist was created mostly during the last ten years and has had a huge impact on my understanding of the social function of contemporary art.
