November 11 - December 12, 1999 Škuc Gallery & P74 Gallery

On November 11, the exhibition The taste of the City will open at Galeriji P74 and Galeriji Škuc. The opening at P74 Gallery will take place at 7 p.m. and continue in Škuc Gallery at 9 p.m. The part of the exhibition at Škuc Gallery features works by Dejan Habicht, Naško Križnar, Tanja Lažetić, Vesna Moličnik, Tadej Pogačar, Marjetica Potrč, Rene Rusjan and Sašo Vrabič. The Taste of the City project and the exhibition as one of its results is founded on scientific and artistic points of departure. In its early stages, the project consisted of lectures by and meetings between visual artists and scientists from the fields of sociology, visual anthropology and history. The entire process was planned as a dialogue between different spheres of activity. The Taste of the City is a middle form between the point where art stresses its cognitive and research scale, which traditionally is its very important part, and the point where science focuses on aspects of the presentation of visual or even formal potentials of scientific work. In this process the exhibition represents only an intermediate step. The joint theme of the entire research process or the exhibition itself represents an original approach to the city as a cultural centre, residential area, urban or social environment and mental space. Although research objectives differ, research methods employed here by the scientist and artist do not differ so much. The P74 Gallery presents Darko Božič, Lucija Grilec, Marjeta Mežik, Ana Pertinač, Sidewalk and Biba Šehovič. The Taste of the City workshop and exhibition features artists of the youngest generation. Within the workshop, selected urban problems are explored, such as those pertaining to the marginal in an urban area (suburbs, dormitory towns, empty land lots), social communities and youth groups, e.g. In their work, the participants employ electronic media (video, computer animation), photography and forms of social interaction. For most of them, this is their public debut. The curators of The Taste of City project are Gregor Podnar, Tadej Pogačar and Igor Zabel.
