General about agriculture in Slovenia
Due to the specific climate and geographic conditions,
agriculture in Slovenia is carried out under rather
unfavourable circumstances in comparison to other countries
in Europe. The climate is generaly cold and humid with the
exception in the southwestern and northeastern regions of
Slovenia, where higher temperatures prevail and more serious
drought occures during summer months. Only 30.32%
(614.692 ha in 1997) of the land is utilized land, of which
28,25% (173.658 ha in 1997) is arable land and 43,19%
meadows; the rest are orchards, vineyards and pastures.
Livestock production has due to land use categories bigher
emphasize in agriculture production, therefore field crop
production is mainly devoted to forage crop production,
while sugar beet, vegetable, fruit and wine production are
important economic categories as well. Generally speaking
the agricultural situation in Slovenia is most similar to
that in Austria and Switzerland.
