FESTIVAL KLEMENČIČEVI DNEVI

ZAGREB PUPPET THEATRE

The theatre started off as a Family of the Young headed by Vlado Habunek; it was later professionalised (Zemaljsko kazalište lutaka, 1948), and changed its name into Zagrebačko kazalište lutaka (1953). During the early period it was still trying to step out of anonymity, and in the sixties (D. Mladinov, B. Deleži}) the foundations were laid for a new perception of puppets. Through numerous shows, with modern dramaturgy and new expression the theatre has achieved international fame and reputation. In addition to its regular repertoire, the programme of Small Forms and the Evening Scene for adults were introduced in the eighties.

Igor Mrduljaš, THREE HEROES FROM BAGHDAD, NOT TO MENTION SCHEHERAZADE A puppet show about three, slightly senile, adventurers, who day after day meet in a bar called The Arabian Nights in order to evoke memories of their youth. Sometimes, as old people will, they mix up the events, borrow from each other little sarcasms in order to embellish their stories; from time to time they argue, until wise Scheherazade calms the passions with strong coffee like a Persian Sultana, who intended to castrate her horse, but then changed her mind and ordered it to be served with coffee... The show abounds in genies, sea monsters, vagrants and miracles of all kinds.
